Kyle Rayner
"A little civil disobedience never hurt anybody." DC Comics
|
Kyle Rayner is a high-ranking member of the Green Lantern Corps from Earth. After the rest of the Corps was destroyed, he alone was selected to bear the last power ring and carry on the title. Although he acted alone for many years, when the Corps was reformed, his skill level gave him a position as an Honor Guard, only behind Salakk and the Guardians in the chain of command of the Corps. He has also been a host for the Ion entity, and a member of the Justice League.
Kyle Rayner was not chosen.
He is not anyone’s legacy. He is not part of anyone’s grand plan. When Parallax wiped out OA and the Guardians, Ganthet, the last guardian gave Kyle Rayner the only Green Lantern Ring in existence. And thus, Kyle Rayner, a random person in an alleyway became the only Green Lantern left.
As such, he treated it at first as a game. Kyle is creative, bright and full of life. He does have a slight reckless streak which means he often reacts first before assessing a situation. He often can be emotionally volatile, though with age and experience he becomes more and more patient and observant, though his feelings can still often get the better of him. He doesn’t take well to being judged and pitted against others, constantly feeling there is a higher level of criteria that he must continually push himself towards, even though he’s new and unrealized. And like many people in a creative field, Kyle often struggles with his self-image and the imposter syndrome. He is well aware that he is not the ideal candidate to be a hero and he’s had less successes than failures. And his failures end up with his loved ones perishing before he could do anything about it. He bears this heavily, constantly going back to the past and his regrets. But unlike the many heroes before him, Kyle is adaptable. He doesn’t stew around forever or constantly digs his heels into the ground. He learns from everyone around him and takes their opinions into consideration. He seeks out other great heroes to learn from them and become a better hero. Even when he held god-like power as Ion, he still looked to his colleagues and friends to help him balance this great power so he didn’t become a tyrant or a monster. And it was this ability to self-reflect that had him give up being Ion and go back to being a Green Lantern. He can be reckless. Emotional. He has a quick fire temper that flares up and there are times he can be petulant, sulky and childish. But those are fleeting moments in the emotional makeup of Kyle Rayner, who is ultimately kind, reflective and understanding. He takes the time and energy to do his best, to cover his blind spots and to uphold a legacy he was thrust into. And it is a legacy he has earned as the Torchbearer, the everlasting flame. The person who carries his hope within him even when all the odds are pitted against him.
Artistry: Kyle is an excellent artist, even able to go commercial and appear on talk shows about his work. Hand to Hand Combat: Taught by Batman, the Martian Manhunter and Arsenal, Kyle is never a heavy hitter but he is a decent combatant. Indomitable Will: Much like many of the Green Laterns, Kyle displays an incredibly strong will, even being able to resist mind control. Constructs: Kyle Rayner can create amazing constructs through the Green Lantern Ring. They can be realistic, tiny, large, whatever his imagination deems them to be. He can also create shields and create blasts of energy. Reality Manipulation: A leftover power from Ion that will manifest in Meta. As Ion, Kyle could change reality as he saw fit. Flight: With the Ring, Kyle can fly anywhere in the universe.
